This character reference is meant to help Web authors manage their characters and character references. If the terms UCS, ISO Latin - , character encoding and named character reference mean nothing to you, first please be calm, as they're only barely English. For a primer on character sets and encodings, check out HTML With Style Tutorial which will give you a gentle introduction.
The characters listed here are split into three groups: The first group lists all the first - characters in UCS (the ISO Latin - characters). The second and third tables list the rest of the named enties defined in HTML and XHTML , with the second table listing symbols, mathematical symbols and Greek letters and the third table listing markup-significant and internationalization characters.

When editing HTML it's easy to make mistakes. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a simple way to fix these mistakes automatically and tidy up sloppy editing into nicely layed out markup? Well now there is! Dave Raggett's HTML TIDY is a free utility for doing just that. It also works great on the atrociously hard to read markup generated by specialized HTML editors and conversion tools, and can help you identify where you need to pay further attention on making your pages more accessible to people with disabilities.
Tidy is able to fix up a wide range of problems and to bring to your attention things that you need to work on yourself. Each item found is listed with the line number and column so that you can see where the problem lies in your markup. Tidy won't generate a cleaned up version when there are problems that it can't be sure of how to handle. These are logged as "errors" rather than "warnings".
Tidy can now perform wonders on HTML saved from Microsoft Word ! Word bulks out HTML files with stuff for round-tripping presentation between HTML and Word. If you are more concerned about using HTML on the Web, check out Tidy's "Word- " config option! Of course Tidy does a good job on Word'files as well!
Dave Raggett has now passed the baton for maintaining Tidy to a group of volunteers working together as part of the open source community at Source Forge. The source code continues to be available under an open source license, and you are encouraged to pass on bug reports and enhancement requests

The Office HTML Filter is a tool you can use to remove Office-specific markup tags embedded in Office documents saved as Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). When you create an HTML document in Office , Office-specific markup tags are embedded in it. These tags help "round-trip" the document for editing purposes. For example, if you create the document in Word and save it as HTML, the code embedded in the document allows you to re-open the document in Word and use the same features you originally used to create the page.

So what do static Web pages do better than managed Web pages? Well, they initially cost less and go up quickly. Other than that, there are no real incentives to go this route. More often than not, though, these factors alone make up the argument against a content management system, not only by small to midsize businesses, but surprisingly also by Fortune companies.
So how do you convince a company that no matter how small its Web presence it should consider some sort of content management system? It's easy. Just ask management one question: What would happen if the Web master were struck by lighting tomorrow? All kidding aside, it brings up an important point. Having one all-knowing "key master" for your company's Internet, intranet, and extranet is probably not a good business practice. It's like having only one key to the office and everyone having to depend on one person for access. What happens if he's late or, worse yet, doesn't show up at all?

Help & Manual is the perfect solution for writing online and print documentation. Help & Manual creates web based help, all standard Windows help formats and print manuals from a single source. One of the more outstanding features, however, is the built-in PDF engine: great looking PDF files without additional tools (Adobe Acrobat is not required).
Help & Manual is a help authoring tool that lets you create and edit your online help project and export it to a variety of file formats. It can output your initial help file into Adobe PDF, HTML Help, plain HTML, Winhelp and other file formats. With its WYSIWYG approach to creating help files and printed manuals, what you see at design time is what you get at run time.
The word-processor-style interface is clear and straight-forward. Designing a table of contents, a keyword index or context sensitive help is not an extra task but fully integrated. You create hyperlinks to other topics with a simple drag and drop and test it in design mode.
Help & Manual is made for help authors, programmers and everybody who wants to easily create structured documentation. Most of our customers are software developers or help authoring professionals. You should be familar with a word processor but don't need to have experience with the technical process of help file compilation.

Microsoft® HTML Help is the standard help system for the Windows platform. Authors can use HTML Help to create online help for a software application or to create content for a multimedia title or Web site. Developers can use the HTML Help API to program a host application or hook up context-sensitive help to an application. As an information delivery system, HTML Help is suited for a wide range of applications, including training guides, interactive books, and electronic newsletters, as well as help for software applications.
HTML Help offers some distinct advantages over standard HTML, such as the ability to implement a combined table of contents and index and the use of keywords for advanced hyperlinking capability. The HTML Help compiler (part of the HTML Help Workshop) makes it possible to compress HTML, graphic, and other files into a relatively small compiled help (.chm) file, which can then be distributed with a software application, or downloaded from the Web.
HTML Help consists of an online Help Viewer, related help components, and help authoring tools from Microsoft Corporation. The Help Viewer uses the underlying components of Microsoft Internet Explorer to display help content. It supports HTML, ActiveX®, Java, scripting languages (JScript®, and Microsoft Visual Basic® Scripting Edition), and HTML image formats (.jpeg, .gif, and .png files). The help authoring tool, HTML Help Workshop, provides an easy-to-use system for creating and managing help projects and their related files.
